When are Elections Held?


 

Political Party Primaries

In the primary, party candidates are nominated for offices, which are elected in the General Election. Political Party Primaries are generally held in May and Second Primaries (if necessary) seven weeks thereafter.

Municipal Elections
Non-partisan Municipal Elections are held in November of odd-numbered years. (Monroe in October with run-off in November.)

General Elections
Are held on Tuesday after the first Monday in November of each even-numbered year.

Presidential Elections
Presidential Elections are held every four years.

U.S. Senate
U.S. Senators are elected for six-year terms. Most other offices are for a four-year term.

House & State
Members of U.S. House of Representatives, Members of the N.C. House and N.C. Senate are elected every two years.
