Current Topics for the Union County Historic Preservation Commission

Current Topics

In the process for designation as a historic landmark is the Stallings Methodist Church.  The application has been sent to the Preservation Office at Archives in Raleigh.  Their evaluation and the application will next be sent to the county commissioners, who will schedule a public hearing before they vote on designation.

Another current topic is the anticipation of the loss of the county's oldest house, the William Houston house on Dead Man's curve where Gold Mine Road dead ends into Stouts-Wesley Chapel Road.  The Preservation Commission has worked for years to find a solution to reuse the home, or even move it.  Permission has been given for the volunteer fire department to burn the house.  Many of the old features have been removed to be sold or used at the Waxhaw Museum.

We anticipate permission requested to put up a new veterans monument on the grounds of the old courthouse. More details later.
